Okinawa

Japan's Subtropical Diving Haven with Ancient Monuments and Hammerhead Sharks

Okinawa Prefecture stretches over 1,000 kilometers from south of mainland Japan toward Taiwan, encompassing the Kerama, Miyako, and Yaeyama island groups. The Kuroshio Current brings warm, clear water that supports over 400 species of coral, making these reefs among the most diverse in the northern hemisphere. The Kerama Islands, just 40 minutes by fast boat from Naha, were designated a national park in 2014 and boast visibility often exceeding 30 meters. Yonaguni Island at the far western end features the enigmatic underwater rock formations that some believe to be ancient ruins, along with winter hammerhead shark aggregations. Ishigaki and the Yaeyama Islands offer reliable manta ray encounters from September to November at Manta Scramble.

Top Dive Sites

Yonaguni Monument

5-25m

Mysterious terraced rock formations resembling man-made structures off the southern coast of Yonaguni Island. Whether natural or artificial remains debated, but the massive stone steps, flat surfaces, and right angles create an awe-inspiring dive. Winter brings large schools of hammerhead sharks to the area.

Blue Cave (Maeda Point)

3-12m

A natural limestone cavern on Okinawa's main island illuminated by sunlight streaming through underwater openings, creating a brilliant blue glow. This is one of Japan's most popular dive and snorkel sites, accessible to all levels with calm, protected conditions inside the cave.

Manta Scramble (Ishigaki)

5-15m

A shallow channel between Ishigaki and Kohama islands where manta rays gather to feed and be cleaned from September to November. Divers observe from designated waiting areas as mantas glide overhead repeatedly. One of the most reliable manta encounters in Asia.

Miyako Caves (Ant's Lagoon)

5-30m

Miyako Island is famous for its extensive underwater cave and tunnel system formed in raised coral limestone. Ant's Lagoon features dramatic light beams penetrating through cracks in the ceiling, creating cathedral-like underwater chambers that are unique to this region.

Sunabe Seawall

3-20m

A convenient shore dive along the coast of central Okinawa, popular for its easy access and rich macro life. The coral-covered seawall drops to a sandy slope where divers find nudibranchs, moray eels, lionfish, and occasional eagle rays. Excellent for night diving.
