Maldives

Tropical Atoll Paradise with Manta Rays and Whale Sharks

The Maldives consists of 1,192 coral islands grouped into 26 natural atolls, with a marine territory spanning roughly 90,000 square kilometers. Diving here is defined by channel (kandu) drift dives, where nutrient-rich currents flowing between atolls attract grey reef sharks, eagle rays, and schools of pelagic fish. South Ari Atoll offers year-round whale shark encounters, while Baa Atoll's Hanifaru Bay hosts one of the world's largest manta ray feeding aggregations during the southwest monsoon. Liveaboard trips are the best way to explore multiple atolls and access remote dive sites. The Maldives also features excellent night diving with nurse sharks, moray eels, and bioluminescent plankton on many beaches.

Top Dive Sites

Hanifaru Bay

5-15m

A UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in Baa Atoll where up to 200 manta rays gather to feed on concentrated plankton during the southwest monsoon. Snorkeling only is permitted to protect the mantas. This is one of the largest known manta aggregation sites on Earth.

Maamigili (South Ari Atoll)

5-20m

The most reliable whale shark encounter site in the Maldives, with sightings possible year-round. Juvenile whale sharks patrol the outer reef edge feeding on plankton. Snorkeling is the primary method for interaction, following strict codes of conduct.

Maaya Thila

8-30m

A submerged pinnacle in South Ari Atoll famous for its spectacular night diving. Whitetip reef sharks hunt around the thila at night, while by day divers enjoy dense soft coral cover and overhangs sheltering moray eels and lionfish.

Fish Head (Mushimasmingili Thila)

10-35m

One of the Maldives' most iconic dive sites in North Ari Atoll. This protected marine area features a pinnacle swarmed by grey reef sharks, Napoleon wrasse, schools of trevally, and fusiliers in a thrilling current-swept environment.

Fotteyo Kandu

10-35m

Considered the finest channel dive in the Maldives, located in Vaavu Atoll. The channel walls are adorned with spectacular overhangs covered in soft corals, while grey reef sharks, eagle rays, and tuna cruise the blue water.
