Malapascua

Malapascua

The World's Best Spot for Thresher Shark Encounters

Malapascua is a small coral island just 2.5 kilometers long, located off the northern tip of Cebu in the Philippines. Despite its tiny size, it has earned a global reputation as the world's premier destination for thresher shark encounters. Every morning before dawn, divers descend to Monad Shoal, a submerged island plateau at 18-25 meters, where pelagic thresher sharks rise from the depths to visit cleaning stations. The success rate is remarkably high — over 90% on good days. Beyond the signature thresher experience, Malapascua offers a wealth of diving variety: Gato Island's caves and sea snake colonies, Kimud Shoal's deep encounters with thresher and hammerhead sharks, and vibrant house reefs with mandarin fish dusk displays. The island maintains a laid-back, small-island atmosphere that contrasts with its world-class diving reputation.

Top Dive Sites

Kimud Shoal

20-40m

A deep submerged seamount where pelagic thresher sharks and occasional hammerhead sharks can be encountered in the blue water. This site requires an early morning boat ride and is considered more advanced than Monad Shoal, with deeper depths and stronger currents, but rewards with dramatic open-water shark encounters.

Monad Shoal

18-28m

The world's most reliable site for thresher shark encounters. This submerged island plateau serves as a cleaning station where pelagic thresher sharks ascend from deep water every dawn. Divers wait quietly at the edge of the plateau as sharks with their distinctive elongated tail fins glide past, often within a few meters.

Gato Island

5-25m

A marine sanctuary featuring a dramatic underwater cave and tunnel system that you can swim through. The island is home to a large colony of banded sea kraits (sea snakes), whitetip reef sharks resting in the shallows, and bamboo sharks. The surrounding reef is healthy and colorful with excellent macro life.

White-tip Alley

15-25m

A sandy channel near Monad Shoal where large numbers of whitetip reef sharks congregate to rest during the day. Divers can observe dozens of sharks lying motionless on the sandy bottom, sometimes stacked on top of each other. At dusk, the sharks awaken and begin their nightly hunting patrols.

The Guardhouse

5-18m

A beautiful reef site on the western side of Malapascua known for its exceptional macro diving. The coral-encrusted slope is home to flamboyant cuttlefish, blue-ringed octopus, and mandarin fish that perform their mating dance at dusk. The site also serves as a night dive location for observing nocturnal critters.
